Rooted in generations of ancient wisdom
Teachings passed carefully through generations of Tla-o-qui-aht citizens emphasize the deep interconnectedness between people and the natural world. We are not separate from nature, but a part of it. This wisdom underpins our environmental stewardship and governance philosophy.
The Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks exist to promote our Indigenous culture of care and reciprocity, strengthening the abundance of these lands for future generations. We invite visitors to participate and learn about the ways Tla-o-qui-aht and our Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks Allies continue to strengthen the life force of the ecosystems to which we belong.
We've made a lasting difference for culture, community, and the environment.
By upholding and respecting Indigenous laws and recruiting the support of the broader community, Tla-o-qui-aht and neighbouring First Nations have protected 76,000 hectares of critical habitat, sequestered 100 million tonnes of carbon, and defended the largest intact coastal temperate rainforest on Vancouver Island against clearcut logging and mining.
