The 2023 Report Is Now Available!

The Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks team is excited to announce the release of the 2023 Tribal Parks Report. The past two years have marked a period of growth and meaningful partnerships as we continue to share our vision and expand the reach of Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks.

Highlights from 2022-2023

Here are some key achievements and milestones highlighted in this year’s report:

  • National Geographic Feature: In July 2022, Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks was prominently featured in National Geographic Magazine's cover story, which focused on the resurgence of Indigenous stewardship practices across North America.

  • New Tourism Partnerships: Tourism Tofino has made commitments to integrate Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks into their destination marketing, while 4VI (Tourism Vancouver Island) and Indigenous Tourism BC are fostering programs inspired by our Tribal-Parks-Allies initiative, encouraging similar successes across British Columbia.

Supporting Indigenous Rights and Economic Benefits

In line with BC’s 2022-2027 DRIPA Action Plan, significant progress has been made to honor Indigenous rights, including the right to benefit from economic activities in Indigenous territories. This commitment is vital to the continued growth and sustainability of Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks and Indigenous communities across the province.

Expanding Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks Initiatives

With support from Pacific Economic Development Canada, the Tla-o-qui-aht team launched several new initiatives, including:

  • naaʔuu Interpretive Dinner Series: A new cultural event series, naaʔuu brings guests together for an immersive experience in Tla-o-qui-aht culture through food, art, and storytelling.

  • Public Art and Signage: Tla-o-qui-aht art and signage were installed at strategic locations across the Tribal Parks, showcasing the heritage and beauty of the region.

  • Strengthening ʔaʔukmin Tribal Park: Our presence at ʔaʔukmin Tribal Park has been enhanced, creating more opportunities for public engagement and environmental stewardship.

Growing the Tribal Parks Allies Community

We continue to expand our Tribal Parks Allies program, with new businesses joining every two weeks. Currently, there are 120 participating Allies, demonstrating widespread support for Indigenous stewardship and sustainable tourism.
