Sponsorship Fuels Restoration at Wanachus-Hilthuuis Tribal Park

Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks expresses heartfelt gratitude to Tourism Tofino for their sponsorship this summer, supporting the ongoing restoration of the Big Tree Trail, our flagship tourism destination at Wanachus-Hilthuuis Tribal Park.

Extending and Restoring the Big Tree Trail

In collaboration with Tourism Tofino and other partners, we launched a major extension and restoration project along the Big Tree Trail. Tourism Tofino’s generous contribution of $15,000 directly supported the Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks Guardians Program, enabling us to expand our vision of empowering young Guardians with interpretive skills and ecological knowledge.

Protecting the “Tree of Life”

The iconic Tree of Life – a towering giant cedar beloved by visitors – is a focal point of our restoration efforts. With heavy foot traffic endangering its delicate root system, we constructed a viewing platform to help preserve the tree for generations to come. This platform not only reduces impact on the fragile ecosystem at its base but also aids in retaining moisture during dry seasons, helping sustain the tree’s health.

Guardians in Training: Learning, Preserving, and Leading

The restoration of the Big Tree Trail is an invaluable training ground for our young Guardians. As they build boardwalks, maintain trails, and construct platforms, they are also learning about the history, ecology, and profound connection that the Tla-o-qui-aht people uphold with this forest. This hands-on experience is essential for their development, preparing them to lead interpretive tours of the trail as it reopens in its restored form over the coming years.

Thank You, Tourism Tofino

With Tourism Tofino’s support, we are one step closer to our vision of a vibrant, sustainable, and educational experience on the Big Tree Trail. Together, we are working to ensure that future generations can witness the beauty of Wanachus-Hilthuuis Tribal Park, enriched by the guidance and knowledge of Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks Guardians.
